Berlin department store, atrium
The redesign of the atrium in a Berlin department store is part of a comprehensive modernization of the traditional department store.
For the re-design of the atrium, a secondary supporting structure was created which, despite the limited load-bearing capacity of the existing ceiling, enables the installation of a large-area grid ceiling, lighting and stage technology, as well as building services equipment. The wall cladding with color gradient, designed by the artist Sabine Marcelis, consists of individually synthetic resin-coated façade panels.
Together with the four central columns, which are made of large-format aluminum panels, these elements were mounted on steel substructures to compensate for the tolerances of the existing structure.
The work was carried out from a temporary intermediate level during ongoing business operations with customer traffic passing below.
